Colleen was born in Evanston, Illinois, but was raised in Houston, Texas. She is married and has two sons, one cat, and a very affectionate Westie who is more like her third child. She has a bachelor of fine arts degree from Southern Methodist University and did a stint at California Institute of the Arts working toward a master of fine arts degree. Nora, Nick, and Cyrano, the characters in the book, are based on three real squirrels that live fearlessly in her front yard and wait outside for nuts, conversation, and occasional belly rubs.
